Caldwell Snyder Gallery is pleased to present Second Skin, a solo exhibition of new works by Brazilian artist Marta Penter, opening October 3rd at the gallery’s Saint Helena location.
Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Penter studied psychology before turning to art, a background that continues to inform her careful observations of human behavior, identity, and connection. Working through highly detailed figurative scenes, Penter explores the relationship between the internal and external worlds, creating compositions where reflections, figures, windows, and surrounding environments overlap and converge.
In 2nd Skin, windows and reflective surfaces become more than elements of the urban landscape. They act as thresholds between reality and illusion, revealing simultaneous perspectives and moments in time. Figures appear layered within their surroundings, blurring the boundaries between observer and observed, interior and exterior, and what is present versus what is remembered.
Penter continues to live and work in Porto Alegre and has exhibited extensively throughout Brazil and internationally. Her work has been presented at museums, galleries, and art fairs including Galeria de Arte Mosaico in Porto Alegre, Galeria João Lagoa in Portugal, and the IV Bienal de Aquarela de Viña del Mar in Chile.
