BETWEEN DAY & NIGHT | GILLES MARREY

May 30 — Jun 30, 2026

Parisian artist Gilles Marrey is known for his closely observed scenes of contemporary life, from domestic interiors to urban and suburban landscapes—places often seen but rarely examined. Using a nuanced, atmospheric palette of violets, oranges, blues, and pinks, he brings a quiet intensity to everyday settings, revealing their subtle emotional and visual complexity. His work encourages viewers to pause and reconsider familiar environments with fresh attention.

Marrey’s interest in American landscapes began in the early 1990s during a formative stay in New York. Encounters with the work of Richard Diebenkorn deepened his engagement with landscape, particularly in the interplay of structure, perspective, and light. Since then, he has traveled widely across the United States, exploring the dynamic relationships between built environments and the natural world.

Trained in France during the 1980s, Marrey developed his practice in contrast to dominant movements such as postmodernism and minimalism, drawing instead from figurative traditions and a sustained commitment to realism. His work seeks not only to depict appearances, but to capture the full presence, atmosphere, and lived experience of a place..
