BOUNDLESS: Charlotte Bernstrom and Gary Bukovnik

May 3 — May 30, 2025

Andra Norris Gallery is delighted to present BOUNDLESS, an exhibition featuring new and historic work from two celebrated artists: abstract acrylic painter Charlotte Bernstrom, and floral master watercolorist Gary Bukovnik.

Charlotte Bernstrom

Swedish-American visual artist Charlotte Bernstrom creates acrylic paintings as poetic explorations that depict the full spectrum of nature. She takes cues from both Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism, juxtaposing nature-inspired fields of color over earthlike stained and textured canvas. The autobiographical works are slow in the making, and they invite viewers also to take pause and consider their place within the natural world.
“Longing” and “Opening,” two of Bernstrom’s newest paintings created between late 2024 and 2025, are subdued and introspective. Earlier works, such as “Kiss of Fire,” painted in 2023, are bolder. There are usually references to water and sky, as well as land, in her work. Even Bernstrom’s most abstract paintings will include a horizon line, even if seemingly fleeting as in “Moonlake,” painted in 2023.
A studio artist who paints out of doors when she is able, Bernstrom’s aim is to convey uniquely and truthfully what nature presents to her, mirroring her place and ours as integral to the world around.

Gary Bukovnik

Gary Bukovnik is a globally celebrated California artist who paints iconic floral watercolors that reflect nature’s opulence with a sensual vitality. The vibrant and powerful still life paintings speak a universal language of joy and evoke what it means to be alive.
We are delighted to include eight new paintings in the exhibition, including the serene “Wisteria,” 60 x 48 inches, painted in 2025. Showing at Andra Norris Gallery for the first time is a suite of three handpainted folding screens created with watercolor on mulberry paper within a minimal wood frame. Each screen includes custom Japanese hanging hardware for wall mounting.
Mr. Bukovnik has been associated with the San Francisco Symphony for decades, during which time his paintings graced the walls of San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall. With his vast Asian and European solo museum exhibition experience, his iconic works are collected worldwide. He is the focus of “A Life in Art,” a new film about rediscovering our passions, currently in production.
