60SIX presents a sixth exhibition of work by composer, songwriter, instrument builder
and visual artist Peter Whitehead. Born in England, Peter has lived and worked in the US since 1975, exploring visual arts and music. In his painting practice he constructs harmonious sequences with the most elemental visual forms: diagonal, horizontal and vertical lines, stripes, and most recently layered grids of squares.
The artist says about this series: “Painting squares on a flat two dimensional surface relates
to playing music. Music exists in time and so can be written left to right in measures. 1, 2, 3,
4, 5 etc. You can divide the rhythm into odd time or even time. 4/4, 3/4, 7/8 etc . Something
happens in each measure : Up or down, louder, softer, silence, color, inflection, choice of instrument. Similarly, each painted square contributes different information to an overall
two dimensional composition. Painting is visible & physical. Music however remains
invisible, but three dimensional.”
