Hunter Saxony III: Pieces Of A (Black Man)

Sep 19 — Oct 19, 2024

San Francisco, CA. Aug 27th, 2024. Eleanor Harwood Gallery is pleased to present Hunter Saxony III’s second solo show with the gallery “Pieces of a (Black) Man” in Minnesota Street Project’s main atrium. Please join us for the artists reception on Thursday October 3rd 5-7pm. The exhibit will be presented in conjunction with the Museum of African Diaspora’s (MOAD) Inaugural ‘Nexus’ Bay Area, San Francisco Black Art Week from October 1-6.

Hunter Saxony III’s work investigates line, form, shape, and text through abstract ornamentation Pieces of a (Black) Man is a reference to a 90’s hip-hop album, “Pieces of a Man” by the rapper AZ, and also a subtle reference to the Hip Hop era of the artists’ youth.

In Pieces of a (Black) Man, Hunter Saxony III’s works present themselves as meditations, placeholders of intention and of respite. They serve as metaphorical “Pieces” of the Artist, by continuing to pair the technical and historically rich style of Pictorial Calligraphy with Contemporary themes and messaging.

Artist Bio

A Rhode Island-born, San Francisco-based Ornamental Calligrapher, Hunter Saxony III investigates love and loss, mortality, preservation, and the discovery of self. His work is presented with a signature palette of red and black brush strokes paired with a confident mark-making identity. His lifelong penchant for written words can also be seen in a minimalist version of storytelling that invites the viewer to consider just as much as it asks for understanding. Saxony employs shape, form, and text to present a delicate and sometimes visceral look into the human condition.

His works have been collected by The Letterform Archive and the Richard Harrison Collection of Calligraphy & Lettering at the San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco, CA
