Summer at Meyerovich: New Acquisitions by Frankenthaler, Freeman, Sultan & Ritz

Jul 16 — Sep 10, 2018

Meyerovich Gallery presents “Summer at Meyerovich” new acquisitions by Helen Frankenthaler, Eric Freeman, Donald Sultan and Esther Ritz.  This exhibition features a collection of works on paper and paintings by American contemporary and abstract artists.

Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) was a critical figure in the New York school of Abstract Expressionism, and central to the development of Color Field Painting.  “Alaska,” 1989 (48 x 37 inches) is a richly textured and colored work deriving from her complex and unique technique of utilizing working models, melted wax, and a multifaceted printing process.  This large-scale work is unambiguous, allowing for a lucid contemplation of the abstract landscape in the colors of putty green, pink, blue-green, white and yellow.

Donald Sultan (b. 1951) is known for his contemporary approach to the conservative still-life tradition.  “Fuzzy Dice” 2017 (24 x 24 inches each), an example of Sultan’s famous dice motif, is a silkscreen suite of four with flocking.  This work is an example of the artist’s deconstruction of a dice to the basic elements making it both abstract and representational.

Eric Freeman (b. 1970) well known for his striking works of abstract illusion.  “Shift,”2017 is a works on paper series (22 x 22 inches each) that demonstrate his manipulation of color and light.  He creates three dimensional effects that shift with respect to the viewer’s position in space. Freeman uses custom iridescent pigments that refract light at different intensities  He has drawn inspiration from contemporary artists such as James Turrell and Dan Flavin as well as Color Field painters of the twentieth century such as Mark Rothko and Josef Albers.

Esther Ritz, born New York City, has been working as an abstract painter and contemporary artist in Dallas and Santa Fe for the last fifteen years. Her paintings were recently featured in the Huffington Post, including an extensive interview.  She is inspired by the rhythm of upbeat music, from musicians such as Buddy Holly, Al Green, Elton John, and Aretha Franklin. “Double Time” and “Double Think” (36 x 36 inches) oil paintings are guided by a compelling sense of color and a strong instinct for pattern and texture.

The exhibition will also be displayed on the Gallery’s website: www.meyerovich.com.   For visuals or more information, please contact Alex Meyerovich at 415.421.7171 or art@meyerovich.com.
