Summer Choices: A Group Exhibition

Jul 18 — Sep 2, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: Crown Point Press announces the second phase of its annual group exhibition Summer Choices, which features an additional selection of prints available to Seasons Club members this year. A long-standing program at Crown Point, Seasons Club offers special benefits to members beginning or expanding their art collection (see details below). The exhibition’s new iteration presents twenty-two artists who made etchings at Crown Point, a leader in the medium for over fifty years. Summer Choices is on view until Saturday, September 2, 2017.

In the Crown Point studio artists make marks on copper plates, and printers ink and print each plate with an etching press—a slow, layered process still completed by hand and technically unchanged from its 15th century invention. Artists today, however, use the medium in new ways to make their art, resulting in limited edition, original prints. “Just as an identical twin is not a copy of his brother, the prints in a fine art edition are not copies of one another,” explains Kathan Brown, Crown Point’s founding https://www.sfada.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/62ea1b4d-ab1c-48e1-b79f-3a41f5857004-1.gif and first master printer.

Al Held, for example, used line etching to render an illusionistic world of space and form in Straits of Malacca, 1987. Laurie Reid painted with acid directly onto a copper plate to create delicate, looping curves in First Verse, 2000, while Sol LeWitt made his loops and curves by drawing into hard ground wax with a sharp, etching needle (pictured). Tomma Abts suspends twelve gray shapes on colored lines through her use of soft ground etching and aquatint reversal in Untitled (12 bits), 2009.

Summer Choices includes work by Tomma Abts, Anne Appleby, William Bailey, Christopher Brown, Al Held, Sol LeWitt, Tom Marioni, Susan Middleton, David Nash, Jockum Nordström, Chris Ofili, Nathan Oliveira, Gay Outlaw, Laura Owens, Markus Raetz, Laurie Reid, Wilson Shieh, Shahzia Sikander, Pat Steir, Wayne Thiebaud, David True, Richard Tuttle, and William T. Wiley. It is a sampling of works available to Seasons Club members during July and August. The exhibition is on view in the Crown Point Gallery at 20 Hawthorne Street, San Francisco, July 18 – September 2, 2017. The gallery hours are Monday 10-5 and Tuesday through Saturday 10-6.
